# DJ Charlie – The Colosseum / North East Rave Another DJ who deserves a place in the **Weedy Garage Radio North East Rave Archive** is: # DJ Charlie DJ Charlie belongs to the generation of North East DJs who were playing fast rave music before the later **New Monkey and Makina explosion**. His name is particularly associated with: **The Colosseum – Stockton-on-Tees** alongside DJs and MCs including: **DJ NRG Selector C Full Effect DJ Attack DJ Trouble MC Techno-T MC Stompin MC G-Force MC Attack** ## The Colosseum The Colosseum became one of the most important rave venues on Teesside during the mid-to-late 1990s. And DJ Charlie appears repeatedly in the surviving tape archive. One recording from **1 June 1996** features: **DJ Charlie & DJ Attack** with: **MC Techno-T MC Stompin MC Westwood** Another from **6 July 1996** features: **DJ Charlie & MC Stompin** These aren't simply names remembered decades later — recordings of the actual nights have survived. ## Charlie & Techno-T One combination that appears several times is: # DJ Charlie & MC Techno-T A particularly good surviving set comes from: **22 March 1997** featuring: **DJ Selector C DJ Charlie MC Techno-T** The recording runs for around an hour and a half and has circulated online for years. Another recording from **17 May 1997** features: **DJ Charlie MC Techno-T MC Attack** And there's another from: **11 October 1997** again featuring: **DJ Charlie MC Techno-T MC Attack** These tapes give us a great snapshot of the Colosseum during its later period. ## 5 July 1997 Another preserved Colosseum recording comes from: **5 July 1997** and features: **DJ Charlie DJ Attack MC Techno-T MC Attack MC Lunatic** Again, Charlie is right in the middle of a line-up containing some of the best-known names from that generation of North East rave. ## The North East Sound Before Makina The music at these clubs wasn't simply one genre. North East ravers were hearing combinations of: **UK Hardcore Scottish Bouncy Techno Dutch Hardcore Italian Dance Spanish Rave European Trance** often played considerably faster than originally intended. Then the North East MCs performed over it. That combination helped create a local sound and atmosphere that could be very different from the large national rave events happening elsewhere in Britain. ## The Venue Historical recollections also place DJ Charlie among the North East DJs and MCs who played **The Venue in Spennymoor**, alongside names including: **Selector C G-Force Techno-T Stompin Jason Bushby Adrian Street** That gives Charlie another connection to the wider North East rave circuit beyond the Colosseum. ## After Dark 2 When the Colosseum period came to an end, the scene didn't simply disappear. Historical accounts remember DJs and MCs including: **NRG Full Effect Attack Stompin Techno-T Selector C G-Force DJ Charlie** moving through the next period of North East rave around **After Dark 2**. The clubs changed, but many of the people and musical influences continued. ## Influencing the Next Generation DJ Charlie's influence can also be seen in people who came afterwards. North East DJ and MC **Rossi Impulse** lists Charlie among the northern rave DJs who influenced him during the 1990s, alongside: **Selector C Matrix Scott NRG Reaper Attack** That's another indication that these DJs weren't simply filling spaces on old rave flyers. People growing up around the North East scene were listening to them and learning from them. ## Before New Monkey This earlier history is important when we talk about North East Makina. By the time the New Monkey generation arrived, the North East already had years of: **Fast European rave music DJs and MCs performing together Local rave clubs Tape packs Imported records Hardcore and Bouncy Techno** The later Makina scene developed within that existing culture. DJs such as Charlie, NRG and Selector C therefore belong to an important earlier chapter of the story. --- # Do You Remember DJ Charlie? Did you hear **DJ Charlie at the Colosseum**?
