# DJ Scott – North East Makina Pioneer **DJ Scott – real name Scott Jenner – is an important name in the history of North East Makina.** His story connects **After Dark 2, Spanish Makina, the New Monkey, MakinaUK and Hangar 13**, and helps explain how music coming out of Spain became such a massive part of North East rave culture. ## Finding Makina Scott has recalled discovering Spanish Makina records around **1997–98**. Wanting to find more of the music, Scott and his friend **Darren Adamson travelled to Barcelona**, where they searched record shops and followed the trail to Spanish label **Bit Music**. They returned to the UK carrying a large amount of Spanish music. Those records then started finding their way into North East DJ sets. ## The Weekly Tapes The tapes played a massive part in spreading the sound. Scott remembers his crew producing a **new mixtape every week**, with roughly **250–500 tapes a week** being sold through local shops. Then people copied them for their mates. They were played in cars, bedrooms and house parties across the North East. Long before YouTube and SoundCloud, this was how underground rave music travelled. ## After Dark 2 → New Monkey Scott was involved with **After Dark 2** during the period when the music was changing. Around the turn of the millennium, the **New Monkey in Sunderland** became increasingly important. Makina combined with the North East's rapid MC style and developed into the sound that thousands of ravers now remember from the Monkey era. Scott became one of the DJs associated with that scene alongside names including: **DJ Matrix DJ Chrissy G DJ Culture DJ Rikki King DJ Quest DJ Direct** ## Hangar 13 Scott's story also connects strongly with **Hangar 13**. Contemporary rave discussions from the early 2000s connect Scott with running Hangar 13, which became another major name in North East Makina. Hangar recordings and events featured MCs including: **Tazo Ace Stretch Impulse Scotty Jay Techno-T G-Force Attack Jet KC** and many more. ## A Piece of North East Music History Makina originated in **Spain**, but North East DJs, MCs, promoters and ravers developed their own culture around the music. DJ Scott was one of the people involved during that crucial early period. From finding Spanish vinyl and travelling to Barcelona to the tapes, clubs and later Hangar 13 events, his story is an important chapter in the history of **North East Makina**. --- ## Do You Remember DJ Scott?
