# MC Sparky D – North East / New Monkey Makina MC **MC Sparky D** is another MC remembered from the North East Makina era, particularly through recordings associated with Sunderland's legendary **New Monkey**. For many ravers, Sparky D's name will immediately bring back memories of MC recordings that were passed around on CDs, phones and early internet downloads during the 2000s. ## Land of Dreaming Probably the best-known recording associated with MC Sparky D is: **MC Sparky D – Land of Dreaming** Different copies of the recording have circulated online for years, including versions labelled: **The New Monkey – MC Sparky D – Land of Dreaming** The comments left on surviving copies tell their own story. Listeners remember hearing Sparky D when they were teenagers, playing the recordings around the North East and rediscovering them many years later. ## All Around the World Another well-known Sparky D recording is: **MC Sparky D – All Around the World** Again, New Monkey-labelled versions survive online. These vocal-over-dance-track recordings became a massive part of how North East MC culture spread outside the clubs. You didn't necessarily need to have been inside the New Monkey. Someone would have the recording. Then their mates would copy it. Before long it was being played in houses, cars, parks and youth clubs across the region. ## Lyrical Rhyme Another surviving title is: **MC Sparky D – Lyrical Rhyme** Versions online connect the recording with both the **New Monkey** and **Powerhouse** names. Together with Land of Dreaming and All Around the World, it forms part of the material that has kept Sparky D's name circulating long after the original Makina era. ## The Fast North East MC Style Sparky D became particularly remembered for an extremely fast MC delivery. An old 2008 internet discussion describes him as an exceptionally fast MC and immediately connects the conversation with the New Monkey and the North East scene. That speed fitted perfectly with the increasingly frantic Makina recordings circulating during the 2000s. ## The Internet Rumours There's also an unusual part of the Sparky D story. For years, rumours circulated online claiming that he had died. Even as far back as **2008**, people were arguing online about whether those rumours were true. Different stories were being repeated, but other posters claimed that Sparky D was very much alive. This is a good example of why WGR tries to separate genuine archive evidence from rave-scene rumours. We won't repeat an unverified story as fact. ## Later Middlesbrough Connection Comments attached to surviving Sparky D recordings also claim that he later appeared at an event in **Middlesbrough alongside MC Jester**. That's particularly interesting for our Teesside archive, although we'd like to find an original flyer or event listing before treating the exact appearance as fully verified. ## Part of the New Monkey Generation Whatever happened after the original era, Sparky D left behind recordings that people still recognise today. Tracks and recordings including: **Land of Dreaming All Around the World Lyrical Rhyme Bass Bass Hardcore Disco** continue circulating online. For a generation of North East ravers, these weren't simply internet tracks. They were part of growing up with the Makina sound. ## An Archive We Need to Rebuild There's still plenty missing from the MC Sparky D story. We haven't yet found a reliable original source confirming his **real name, exact hometown or complete history**. And because an American rapper also performed as **MC Sparky D**, internet searches can very easily mix the two artists together. So rather than invent the missing details, WGR is leaving them open. This is exactly the sort of rave history where the people who were actually there may know more than the modern internet does. --- ## Do You Remember MC Sparky D? Do you remember: **Land of Dreaming?** **All Around the World?** **Lyrical Rhyme?** Did you have Sparky D recordings on CD or your phone? Did you hear him at the **New Monkey** or elsewhere around the North East? We're looking for old: **Tapes CDs Flyers Photos Videos Event listings Old website pages** If you've got anything involving **MC Sparky D**, post it below and help us rebuild his story properly. **Weedy Garage Radio – Keeping North East Rave History Alive.**
