# MC Hyper – Middlesbrough / North East Makina MC **MC Hyper** is one of the earlier MC names associated with the **Middlesbrough and wider North East rave scene**. When MC Banks was interviewed about the history of Makina and MC culture in Teesside, he specifically mentioned Hyper when talking about the earlier Middlesbrough generation. Banks said: **“If you go back to where it started there was an MC called MC Hyper.”** That makes Hyper an important name when we're documenting the development of the **Teesside MC scene**. ## The Middlesbrough MCs The Middlesbrough scene produced its own collection of MCs alongside the better-known Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland scenes. In the same interview, Banks remembered names including: **MC Hyper MC Tempo MC Rocking MC Glocky MC Jester** These were some of the MCs who helped establish the Middlesbrough side of North East rave culture. ## Before the Later Makina Generation Hyper appears to belong to an earlier Middlesbrough generation than some of the MCs who became prominent later. By 2014, Banks said Hyper wasn't doing much anymore, but importantly he still named him first when discussing where the Middlesbrough MC scene had started. That's exactly the kind of detail worth preserving. Without old interviews, tapes and memories, names from the earlier local scene can easily disappear from the history. ## The New Monkey Hyper also has a connection with Sunderland's legendary **New Monkey**. A surviving recording circulates under the title: **New Monkey – MC TNT & MC Hyper** The recording was uploaded to SoundCloud in 2012 and listeners were still commenting years later that they'd been searching for it. ## New Monkey – November 2002 There's even stronger evidence in the official digital New Monkey catalogue. The archive contains releases titled: **2 November 2002 – Hyper (Nitro)** and: **2 November 2002 – Hyper (Nitro, Matrix, Direct)** So we can firmly place **MC Hyper in surviving New Monkey material from November 2002**. ## Part of the Teesside Story Hyper is important because the history of North East MCing wasn't confined to Sunderland's New Monkey. **Middlesbrough and Teesside had their own scene.** People were writing lyrics, recording tapes and CDs, travelling to events and developing their own local following. MC Banks later became one of the best documented Middlesbrough MCs, but his own account makes it clear that people such as **MC Hyper were already part of the story before him**. ## An MC We Need More Information About Unlike some of the other MCs in our archive, there isn't a huge amount of reliable biographical information about Hyper still available online. We can document his **Middlesbrough connection** through MC Banks. We can document his **New Monkey recordings**. But details such as his real name, exact dates and complete list of clubs still need further research. Rather than guessing, we'll leave those details open until more original material turns up. And that's where old North East ravers can help. --- ## Do You Remember MC Hyper? Did you see **MC Hyper around Middlesbrough or Teesside**? Did you hear him at the **New Monkey**? Do you remember the **MC TNT & MC Hyper** recording? Maybe you've still got an old Hyper tape, CD, flyer, photograph or video that isn't online. If you know more about MC Hyper, post your memories below. The smaller local names are just as important to preserve as the famous ones. **Weedy Garage Radio – Keeping North East Rave History Alive.**
