MC Stompin: The New Monkey and North East Rave
Explore MC Stompin’s connection with North East rave through New Monkey archive recordings, his DJ Nitro collaboration and listening recommendations for discovering makina.
For this WGR spotlight, the starting point is the music: named sets that let you explore Stompin’s work in its original DJ-and-MC setting.
THE NEW MONKEY CONNECTION
The New Monkey’s official SoundCloud account carries a recording credited to DJ Carl Harker and MC Stompin, labelled as a live set from 1 March 2003. Uploaded in March 2020, it provides a direct route into an earlier chapter of his work. The performance date and the upload date are different: this is an archive recording, not a new 2020 session.

The same account also lists a dedicated “TNM Stompin Special”, crediting DJs Matrix, Concept, Ricki King and Chrisy G. Together, these listings make the New Monkey archive a useful place to begin exploring his collaborations.
A STARTING POINT FOR NORTH EAST MAKINA
In a July 2021 interview with On The Rise DJ Academy, BBC documentary maker Adam Clarkson was asked which mixes he would recommend to someone getting to know makina. He singled out the YouTube recording “New Monkey – Mc Stompin” and also pointed listeners towards a 2004 set with DJ Nitro on Spotify.
That recommendation gives newcomers two specific starting points, rather than simply another name to search. Clarkson’s wider discussion describes a North East scene whose music and MC culture have been passed between generations.

LISTEN: STOMPIN AND DJ NITRO
Spotify lists “Halloween 2004: MC Stompin & DJ Nitro” under The New Monkey. It is another named release to explore alongside the Carl Harker recording, bringing the DJ’s credit into focus as well as the MC’s.

WGR LISTENING TIP
Give a full set time to develop rather than judging it from a short clip. Listen for how the voice sits with the selection, where the MC enters and leaves space, and how the DJ-and-MC partnership changes across the session. These are useful questions for discovering any rave MC—and the linked Stompin recordings offer a place to start.
Archive dates and credits above follow the linked platforms. Recordings remain hosted by their respective providers; WGR does not host or claim ownership of them.
