House Music: From Chicago to the World

House music began in Chicago’s underground club culture around the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s. DJs extended disco’s energy with drum machines, electronic basslines, repeated grooves and creative mixing, building a new sound around the needs of dancers.

THE SOUND

At its core, House uses a steady four-to-the-floor kick, repeating rhythmic patterns and a groove designed to keep moving. Piano chords, soulful vocals, handclaps, synth bass and sampled fragments can all appear, but the genre’s real foundation is rhythm and repetition.

ROOTS AND COMMUNITY

House cannot be separated from the Black, Latino and queer communities that created and sustained its early spaces. Clubs provided places for freedom, identity and collective expression. Chicago producers and DJs turned that culture into records that travelled to New York, Detroit, Britain and continental Europe.

A WORLD OF SUBGENRES

Acid house, deep house, soulful house, progressive house, tech house, hard house and countless regional variations grew from the foundation. House also became a major influence on pop music while continuing to thrive underground.
